Huge outpouring of grief over Matt Lucas’ partner’s death on Daily Mail
I was touched by the emotion evident on the Daily Mail’s website following the news that Matt Lucas had withdrawn from the play Prick Up Your Ears, following the death of his former husband Kevin McGee.
At the time I was on the site there were four comments on the article. Two were up in arms about the fact that McGee was referred to as Lucas’s husband; one suggested Lucas was ‘cutting his losses’ following poor reviews and using the death of his former spouse as an excuse; and the other decried his decision to pull out of the play following the mere death of a loved one.
In fairness to Mail readers, following comments have attacked these original posts for their lack of taste and sensitivity.
I can’t decide whether it say more about Mail reader, or the veneer of posting anonymously that encourages people to be far more unpleasant and tasteless than they would be if face-to-face with the person in question. Either way it’s just nasty and depressing.
